The equals sign was invented by a Welshman called Robert Recorde, who was the first man to introduce algebra to the UK, because when writing his book Whetstone of Witte he wanted to find a short cut to writing equals to. In a mathematical equation the equals sign sits between two values that are the same.

The Gemowe or equals sign was not immediately used, as there was competition from two other symbols æ or œ from the latin aequalis and two upright parallel lines were also used, up to the 1700s

In mathematics the = sign can mean different things; stating a fact like in algebra,(x=2), to state an intent(let x=), a conditional statement(if x=2,then) and universal equivalence,ie in all circumstances they are always equal (x + 1)2 = x2 + 2x + 1.

In an article titled “Students’ understanding of the equals sign” they found that 70% of the students misunderstood the equal sign.
